Revitalize and Replant often talk about dying churches and the pain it creates for members. Thom and Kevin Ezell discuss best practices for leaders to utilize as they help members of a dying church deal with the pain.

Highlights:

  1. Get them to turn that pain into a greater passion for prayer.
  2. Find the intersection of members’ passions, member’s’ gifts, and community needs.
  3. Celebrate more often.
  4. Get them to remember the past to propel them to the future.
  5. Get them to consider a replant.

Resources mentioned in today’s podcast:

      • North American Mission Board
      • Sandals Church
      • Revitalize 2020 – Virtual Conference Registration

    • Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. (Dissatisfaction x Vision of preferred future x Knowledge of first steps) > Resistance = Change. This is how all self-sustaining new conditions (i.e., change) experienced by people—especially in our groups—take place. Pastors should use the pain/dissatisfaction realized by their fellow members to cast vision for a preferred future (like the local church as an organization not being dysfunctional or dying) and then to guide them to their specific parts/actions in bringing that vision into reality. If pastors know too little pain is being experienced by their congregations, they should raise pain’s level (in ethical ways!) or the knowledge of it so that each factor of the change equation is present and functioning together to overcome status quo and produce new conditions that are self-sustaining.

Without enough dissatisfaction of pain experienced, no change can occur.
