Every leader faces criticism. In this episode Kevin and Thom talk about facing criticism and ways leaders can respond to criticism. Leaders will never be able to avoid criticism but they can overcome criticism.

Highlights:

  • Recognize the commonality of criticism
  • “Hurting people hurt people”
  • Love unconditionally
  • Spend time with positive people
  • Find members who will have your back
  • On some occasions, your critic is right
  • Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. One thing, not inviting the pastor’s child to a birthday party is not criticism, it is pure cruelty. Suing the pastor isn’t criticism either. Its pure opposition. I think there is a danger in elevating “simple” criticism (how can we do x better, or shouldn’t we do x better) to “hard” criticism (you are ignorant, you preach horrible, you don’t even know, your wife is ugly).

My question is, how does a person who has a legitimate issue with something the church is doing bring it up without being called critical. I’d like to hear that podcast.

Agree, I asked questions about issues at a Business meeting and was pulled aside a few days later and was told i was perceived as a trouble maker. Any questions are seen as a threat by leadership.

I’m newly active in a Church that might have been diagnosed as “terminal”. Very low attendance, older facility. But…great preaching, wonderful location w/6 acres in the middle of a beautiful upper class suburban neighborhood. Lots wrong, but lots of potential. So, lots of change if life support is to succeed. My belief is that if each working on it is channeled into areas of individual giftings, we’ll make it. But if decisions and actions are in the wrong people, the outcomes will be friction, frustration, and failure. Praise God that in our few numbers, are some great giftings! Lord help us to find and implement them!
