When a staff member leaves, most churches automatically search outside the church for a replacement. Today we offer a different perspective on staffing.

Episode Highlights:

  • Raising up leaders from within to serve on staff is typically a healthier approach to staffing.
  • It’s often a lot easier to hire someone that fire someone.
  • When you hire someone from within the church, it takes much less work and time to get them up to speed.
  • Not every ministry position can be split from a single full-time person to multiple part-time people, but it’s worth considering when an position comes open.

The six reasons we discuss are:

  1. The perspective of fresh eyes
  2. Opportunity for new ministry and new ministers
  3. The cost issue
  4. Coming from the missionary perspective
  5. The key issue of training
  6. Creating empathy

Organizations like local churches really have only one question to answer–answering that question answers all related questions. The question is: “What kind of results from our service will we consistently offer the Lord and the public for which He wants us to care”–and the choices of results are only three: poor, average, or exceptional. Almost nobody chooses to offer God or neighborhoods either poor or average results–but only one kind of group consistently achieves exceptional results: the kind referred to as a high performance team (call that kind of group anything else you may want to; what is important is not what the group is called–what is important is: what is done with that group). If to add part-time employees and those from within the congregation helps local churches consistently achieve for the Lord and neighborhood the exceptional results of service that they deserve, then those church members should be employed in that way. Otherwise, congregations should continue to do what they have done hiring-wise to achieve their exceptional results consistently; not to do so would introduce dysfunction into the organization and can cause it to become too unhealthy to go most rapidly on-mission with/for God (i.e., it could not experience biblical growth or fulfill its biblical reason for existing).

    ~ ~ ‘ USING PART-TIME MINISTRY LEADERS IN A REVITALIZATION OR REPLANT” ~ ~

This is a golden opportunity for spiritual growth of the those involved and the the church start. Caution should be taken for the well-being ( spiritually) of the volunteers and the people ‘being ministered to ~ in these endeavors. Often enthusiastic people are chosen o lead, but without concern for their spiritual well-being during this process.
Regular sessions should be conducted to encourage, pray for and seek in their well being. Always be ready and have additional people to insert as Christian leaders go weary, Jesus often took time to be alone ~ away the Disciples!
Purposely have ‘designed in’ rest breaks to allow additional people to be inserted. Develop meeting times with the old & new people to discuss the good, bad and the ugly ~ praying, Scripture Reading and all communicating.
