The Church Curmudgeon (David Paul Regier) joins us to talk about humor and worship in the church.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Hymns are something people hold onto throughout their lives.
  • Worship is not a spectator sport.
  • It’s possible to keep a worship service fresh without having to do the hot new thing.

About the Church Curmudgeon

Church Curmudgeon is the old guy who sits on the back pew of the sanctuary, farthest from the drums (he measured). He began Tweeting to bring balance to the cyber-continuum, which was leaning towards young and dumb, and to help people build character by overcoming obstacles (he is usually that obstacle). You can also find his complaints on Twitter (@ChrchCurmudgeon) and Facebook.

David Paul Regier is a worship leader and songwriter living in Murrieta, California

I’ve been accused of having a “strange” sense of humor all my life. As Pastor, sometimes I reach that fateful point when I have to explain a joke or comment. Sigh! I will try (I’m 72, for crying out loud) to subscribe (is that the right term??) to the Church Curmudgeon if for no other reason to see how I can improve and become one. In parting (I’m also bald) let me ask the panel which of the disciples would have become the humor blogger/tweeter/Facebook comic in the book of Acts? Hard to have humor from a jail cell, I guess, but still… “Hey Peter, you gonna finish that rat?”

church members should tune in on what Comedians parody about the church.
However they are going to have to leave their religious channels and radio programs to discover what the ‘outsiders’ observe about those who are inside the sacred circle.

He sure does sound a lot younger than the age of his twitter pic.

I look forward to his tweets and that of other church humorists. There is an ounce of truth in some of his tweets and that makes them laughable. BadChurchSecretary is another great source for poking fun at the church. 🙂

I laughed out loud about the mustard in the church fridge!! When did you look in our fridge? I don’t even buy my own mustard anymore, I just go over to church and get a jar out of the fridge. (I’m the Pastor’s wife.) Seriously.
