I’ve been concerned about pastoral burnout for many years. I’ve seen it happen to too many pastors during my ministry. Because of this, I’ve been able to identify seven root causes for burnout as it relates to the pastor.

  1. The 24/7 mentality.
  2. Conflict.
  3. Expectations.
  4. Unwillingness to let go.
  5. No friends.
  6. Not suited for some tasks.
  7. No life outside the church.

Today we address these seven areas and ways to overcome the issues as to avoid pastoral burnout.

This is a great approach and really applicable ways to assist with pastoral burnout. Using strategic foresight, I also see in 10 years that our young 12-18 teens will not have the social training to deal with conflict or stress. Their are a vast number of social changes in life that are rooted within our culture. As leaders within the church we may not understand the cultural shifts for 3-5 years as we watch for emerging trends. Burnout is a topic that we must continue talking about with all of our clergy and especially the up-in-coming clergy that will have a new social-cultural foundation.

Hey Thom: I realize that we aren’t suited for everything, but shouldn’t a senior pastor be fairly well rounded? Possessing a little bit of pastor, evangelist, teacher, apostle, prophet?
